It's day three and the hallways are flooded with energy and excited patients testing out their new hip and knee joints. The theme of this year's mission is "Ve por el oro", or "Go for the gold" and several of our incredible patients have achieved their gold medal by going up and down stairs just 1 or 2 days after surgery.
Luis Alcantara, MD (Orthopedic Surgery Attending at the Hospital General de la Plaza de la Salud) and Annie Yingling (Physical Therapist) walk with a post-operative patient down the ward.
Our team includes nurses from both Brigham and Women's Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital.
Our floor nurses and physical therapists have teamed up with devoted Dominican counterparts, eagerly teaching and learning from each other. The patients have also taught us about determination, gratitude and the importance of community, and they are a refreshing reminder of why we became healthcare providers. Each time a patient walks, rounds of applause echo throughout the hallways!
Two physical therapists from the Hospital General de la Plaza de la Salud help a patient stand after surgery.
Our patients are so eager to try out their new joints that we probably could not keep them sedentary if we tried.
We look forward to tomorrow's gold - making smiles, strides and success!
